Origin :
  Ayurveda means the science of life ( Ayu – life , Veda – science). Ayurveda can also be called the Science of Living and it is Upaveda (Supplementary Veda) of the Atharva Veda. According to the Shastras the knowledge of Ayurveda was imparted to Daksha Prajapati by Brahma, the creator of the universe. It not only deals with the prevention of diseases and promotion of health and longevity buy it also cures the diseases. Ayurveda also deals with rejuvenation. Knowledge of Ayurveda then descended to two Ashwini Kumaras and later on to Lord Indra. Dhanwantri was sent by Lord Indra to earth to propagate the knowledge of Ayurveda to the others. Sushruta was the student of Dhanwantri, who wrote the famous treatise on surgery entitled: “Sushruta Samhita”. Charaka was the contemporary of Sushruta who wrote a book on Medicine entitled “Charaka Samhita”.

Basic Principles of Ayurveda:
The universe is composed of Pancha Mahabhootas or five basic elements, viz., Prithvi, Ap, Tejo, Vayu and Akasha or Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether respectively. The human body is also made up of the above pentads of substance. So there is a natural harmony between the universe and man according to Indian philosophy.

Ayurveda, the ancient system of medicine fully recognize and utilize the medicinal property of the plants since Vedic period. The majority of medicines mentioned in ayurveda are plant based.
